A simple XAUUSD scalping strategy trades 5-minute candles in the direction of the 1-hour trend, only during the London–New York overlap, entering on a clear rejection candle at a key level with a fixed stop loss and a target of at least 1.5× the risk. Scalping gold is fast and costly: spreads, slippage and news spikes eat small targets, so strict risk rules matter more than the entry.
What is scalping gold?
Scalping means taking short trades, usually lasting a few minutes to an hour, aiming for small price moves. On XAUUSD that might mean targeting $2–$6 per ounce instead of $20–$50 on a swing trade.
Gold suits scalping because it moves a lot during the day and has deep liquidity in the London and New York sessions. The same speed makes it dangerous: a few seconds of news can move price further than your whole target.
Chart setup
| Item | Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Trend chart | 1-hour (H1) | Decide the only direction you trade today |
| Entry chart | 5-minute (M5) | Time the entry with candle signals |
| Moving average | 50 EMA on H1, 20 EMA on M5 | Trend filter and pullback zone |
| Key levels | Previous day high/low, Asian session high/low, round numbers | Where reactions are most likely |
| Trading window | About 13:00–16:30 UK | Most liquidity, tightest spreads |
Why that window? It is the London–New York overlap. Our guide to the best time to trade gold explains the sessions in detail.
The strategy, step by step
- Set your bias on H1. Price above a rising 50 EMA = look for buys only. Below a falling 50 EMA = sells only. Flat and tangled = no trades today.
- Mark your levels. Draw the previous day’s high and low, the Asian session range and the nearest round numbers (for example 4,000 and 4,050).
- Wait for a pullback on M5. In an uptrend, wait for price to pull back to the 20 EMA or a marked level. Do not chase a candle that has already run.
- Look for a rejection candle. A bullish engulfing candle or a pin bar with a long lower wick at the level (reverse for sells). The candle must close before you act.
- Enter on the next candle. Buy as the next M5 candle breaks the high of the signal candle.
- Stop loss beyond the signal candle. Place it a little below the wick, plus a buffer for the spread.
- Take profit at 1.5–2× your risk. If your stop is $3 away, aim for $4.50–$6. Close half at 1× risk and move the stop to entry if you prefer to lock in.
- Stop for the day after 2 losing trades or once you hit your daily target.
Worked example
H1 shows gold above a rising 50 EMA, so you only look for buys. At 13:40 UK, price pulls back to the Asian session high at 4,021.50 (example prices) and prints a bullish engulfing M5 candle with a low of 4,019.80.
- Entry: 4,023.00, when the next candle breaks the engulfing high.
- Stop loss: 4,019.50, just under the wick ($3.50 risk).
- Take profit: 4,028.25 ($5.25 target, 1.5× risk).
- Size: on a $1,000 account risking 1% ($10), a $3.50 stop allows about 0.02 lots, because 0.01 lots loses $3.50 over a $3.50 move. $10 ÷ $3.50 = 2.86, rounded down to 0.02 lots.

The hidden cost of scalping gold
On a $5 target, a $0.30 spread is already 6% of your reward, and you pay it on every trade, winners and losers. Before you scalp, check:
- Spread during your trading window, not the advertised minimum.
- Commission per lot on raw-spread accounts.
- Slippage around news. Avoid entries in the 15 minutes before and after NFP, CPI and Fed decisions.
- Execution speed. A slow platform or VPS turns good entries into bad ones.
Common XAUUSD scalping mistakes
- Trading against the H1 trend because the M5 “looks oversold”.
- Moving the stop loss further away when a trade goes against you.
- Overtrading in the quiet Asian session, where moves are small and spreads wide.
- Revenge trading after a loss. Read our guide on forcing a trade without a setup.
- Sizing too big because the stop is small. A small stop on gold is still hit often.
FAQ
What is the best time frame for scalping XAUUSD?
Many scalpers use the 1-minute or 5-minute chart for entries and the 1-hour chart for direction. The 5-minute chart gives fewer false signals than the 1-minute.
How much money do I need to scalp gold?
Enough that a normal stop at 0.01 lots stays within 1–2% of your account. With $3–$5 stops, that is a few hundred dollars at minimum, and more is safer.
Is gold scalping profitable?
It can be for disciplined traders with low costs, but most beginners lose money scalping because of spreads, overtrading and emotion. Practise on a demo account first.
Can I scalp gold during news?
It is possible but very risky. Spreads widen and price can jump past your stop. Most scalpers step aside around major releases.
