Margin calculator FAQs
How is margin calculated?
Margin = lot size × contract size × price ÷ leverage, converted into your account currency. For example, 0.1 lots of gold at $4,000 with 1:100 leverage needs about $400.
What is the difference between margin and leverage?
Leverage is the ratio your broker allows (for example 1:100). Margin is the deposit that ratio requires for a position. More leverage means less margin, but the profit or loss per pip stays the same.
Why does my broker show a different margin?
Many brokers use tiered margin, different leverage per instrument, or higher margin around news and weekends. This calculator uses one flat leverage figure.
What happens if my free margin runs out?
If losses push equity close to your used margin, you get a margin call and then a stop-out, where positions are closed. Small risk per trade keeps plenty of free margin.
