Best time to trade gold

Quick answer

The best time to trade gold for most traders is the London–New York overlap, roughly 13:00 to 16:30 UK time (8:00 to 11:30 a.m. New York). That is when the most traders are active, spreads are usually tightest and the big US data releases land. The quietest time is the late US and early Asian hours.

Gold trading sessions explained

Spot gold (XAUUSD) trades almost 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, with a short daily break. The exact opening and closing times depend on your broker, so check its trading hours page once. Through the day, activity moves between three main centres:

SessionUK time (approx.)New York time (approx.)What gold usually does
Asia (Tokyo, Singapore, Shanghai)00:00 – 09:007 p.m. – 4 a.m.Quieter, smaller ranges; China demand can move price
London08:00 – 16:303 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.Volume picks up; London is the centre of physical gold trading
New York13:00 – 22:008 a.m. – 5 p.m.US data and Fed news drive the biggest moves
London–New York overlap13:00 – 16:308 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.Usually the busiest window of the day

Times shift by an hour for a week or two each spring and autumn, because the UK and the US change their clocks on different dates. In late October and early November, for example, the UK has already moved to winter time while New York has not, so US releases arrive an hour earlier in UK time than usual.

Why the London–New York overlap is the best time to trade gold

  • More participants. European and American banks, funds and traders are all active, so there is more volume behind each move.
  • Tighter spreads. More liquidity usually means lower trading costs, which matters on gold because a wide spread eats into small targets.
  • Cleaner trends. Breakouts that start in this window tend to have more follow-through than moves in thin markets.
  • US data. Key US releases such as NFP and CPI come out at 8:30 a.m. New York time, which is 13:30 UK time for most of the year.

News times that move gold

Gold is priced in dollars and reacts strongly to US interest-rate expectations. These are the scheduled events to have on your calendar:

EventWhenUK time (usual)
US jobs report (NFP)Usually first Friday of the month, 8:30 a.m. ET13:30
US inflation (CPI)Monthly, 8:30 a.m. ET13:30
Fed interest-rate decision8 meetings a year, 2:00 p.m. ET19:00
LBMA Gold Price auctionsTwice daily10:30 and 15:00

The LBMA Gold Price is the global benchmark price, set in London at 10:30 and 15:00 UK time. Volume often clusters around these auctions.

Tip: spreads can widen sharply in the minutes around big releases. Many traders avoid opening new positions just before NFP, CPI or a Fed decision, or they reduce their lot size.

When to avoid trading gold

  • The daily rollover. Around the US close (about 22:00 UK), liquidity is thin and spreads widen. Many brokers also pause trading for a short break here.
  • Monday open. Price can gap if there was weekend news.
  • Friday evening. Volume fades before the weekend, and positions held over the weekend carry gap risk.
  • Major holidays. When London or New York is closed, gold can be slow, then jump on low volume.

Trading gold around a full-time job

If you work 9 to 5 in the UK, the overlap falls in your working day. Three practical options:

  1. Trade the US session in the evening (after 17:00 UK), with smaller size because liquidity is lower.
  2. Use pending orders placed in the morning, with a stop loss and take profit already set.
  3. Follow signals that include entry, stop loss and take profit, and copy them with a trade copier.

Whatever you choose, size every trade from your stop loss. Our XAUUSD pip value guide and lot size calculator show how.
